What does worship smell like?
...the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. John 12. 3
A home filled with the welcoming aroma of freshly baked bread or a delicious meal is a most comforting thing!
John tells the story of Mary (sister of Martha and Lazarus, and a close friend of Jesus), pouring a large measure of expensive perfume over the feet of Jesus, then wiping them with her hair. This was an act of astonishing extravagance and intimacy.
But this aroma also offends - particularly Judas, whose heart is constricted by greed and fear. Exuberant generosity easily offends - it challenges us deeply: Are we really satisfied with what we have? Do we truly understand that all we have comes from God in the first place? How come that person can spare that much, when I have so little?
Mary's love for Jesus permeated the whole house along with the fragrance of the perfume she had been saving for such a special moment. As we are granted a glimpse of such adoration, how does it make us feel?
