Stand up, stand firm
The God we serve is able to deliver us - but even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods... (Daniel 3. 17-18)
When it seems like everyone we know is acting a certain way and we find ourselves conforming so we don't stand out, we call it peer pressure. It costs a little to behave differently - perhaps we might not feel so accepted, or be seen as quite so cool.
Daniel and his friends were faced with a much higher cost as they chose to live differently. Ultimately, their lives were at stake if they remained faithful to God. One of the most challenging tales in the Bible is of Daniel's friends, faced with being thrown into a fiery furnace (Daniel 3). They are confident that God will save them, but tell King Nebuchadnezzar 'even if he doesn't, we will never bow down to your false gods'.
What conditions might we put on our faith in God?
