Happy St Frideswide's Day!

Saturday 19th October 2019

Many of us from St Frideswide’s will be spending St Frideswide's Day together in Oxford, along with folk from across the diocese. Did you know that Frideswide is patron saint of Oxford, and she is said to have founded the first religious community on the site of Christchurch Cathedral in Oxford in the 7th century?

The story of her life tells of escape from abduction, refusal to succumb to a forced marriage, and a devotion to God which led to a life of service and sacrifice.

St Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, echoes this kind of dedication:

'...I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.'

The only thing that mattered to Paul, and to Frideswide, was knowing Jesus. Everything else was like rotten rubbish in comparison. They knew they were created, loved and sustained by God, and wanted to give their all for God's glory.

How about you?

What does it mean to you to know Jesus and to follow him?
