'Where, O grave, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?
Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!'
(1 Corinthians 15. 55,57)
I wonder if you are anything like me when it comes to opening presents?
Do you give the package a shake and a squeeze, feel it carefully and listen closely to see if you can work out what's inside? Sometimes your hopes are met, other times maybe you are left feeling slightly flat - why on earth did Aunt Maude think you wanted another pair of those itchy socks for your birthday??
Whatever the case - you know there is something inside the wrapping. There is something to be discovered and received. Something given by someone who cares for you (whether or not they know your taste in socks!)
Easter Day is the only time when an empty package is the best gift of all. The empty tomb is evidence that Jesus really was who he said he was, and that death truly is defeated. There's nothing inside! No more sin and rubbish, no more pain and suffering, no more death, no more doubt about whether God really is in charge and will have the last word. He has had the last word and it still stands today.
Alleluia! Christ is risen! Happy Easter!
