Fishermead Carnival
Just a few days ago, I attended the evaluation for Fishermead Carnival. This carnival had taken place a couple of weeks before, bringing the very diverse community of Fishermead to share time and have fun together.
Sitting at the rectangular table and listening to the laughter, were ten residents who had participated in this community event. Each aspect of the event was evaluated and lists were made of things that were good; to no one’s surprise, food featured high on the list! Music, Kids’ Corner, Business Olympics and Photography were some of the other activities that kept everyone engaged. And of course, there was the list of what could be done differently next time.
“So there’s going to be a next time?”, the question was asked. As the nods and smiles went round the table in agreement, it was noted that something significant had taken place: the community had been listened to, leadership developed and a chance to celebrate diversity in the Fishermead community had not been missed – all very good reasons to repeat the carnival!
I came away from the evaluation thankful that people have an innate desire to make connections with each other. Looking at the things that bring us together are worth focusing on.
