Doing and Walking with God - a testimony by Bosco Choi

In my nearly 40 years of career in a very competitive telecom industry, the goals have always been maximizing the profit for the business and shareholders year after year. Whilst I learnt a lot and gained practical experience in technology, business and management, there were also a lot pressure, stress and burden to constantly deliver.

Since retiring and in the last 5 years, I have been the PCC Treasurer for St. Frideswide’s managing the church finance and the related administrations of the various church ministries. I worked closely with the clergy team, the church leadership as well as the church family. Although the responsibility can be heavy, I did not feel or experience the kind of pressure or burden as I did in the commercial

business. The big difference is that this is God’s business who is all able, generous and always provides what is needed. My part is to be an instrument for him to use. But for the instrument to be useful, I need to be sharpened and stay functional by

Him. To this end, staying close to God by reading His words, seeking and listening through prayers and fellowship with Him and other Christians have been key. It seems that,

 The more I do, the more I need God

 The more I read and pray, the more I am inspired to do

I came to realise this when I reflected during the two months away from Milton Keynes recently. This has become one of the key ways that my faith and dependence on God have been growing in recent years.

Examples

By way of examples, I have been reading the book of Joshua and Judges in my personal reading. In addition, Stephanie, my wife, and I read the bible together with a couple who is relatively new to faith. We are currently reading the book of Acts.

In Acts 9-10, God prepared Peter to deliver the gospel to Cornelius (an Italian centurion) and at the same time preparing Cornelius and his family to receive the same gospel from Peter. When Peter was led to visit Cornelius and shared the gospel, Cornelius and his family accepted Jesus and started to praise Him even before Peter has finished. They were so ready to receive the gospel. This was a major turning point for the apostles to spread the gospel to the gentiles. God works out his plan while we are waiting and preparing. When it is time to deliver his plan, no one can stop it.

In Joshua and Judges, there have been many battles where God led the Israelites to take the land in Canaan from their enemies. There were a number of examples of how God had gone on ahead to weaken the enemies for the Israelites to win the battle with smaller army and sometimes with unlikely “weapons” ….

 Marching round the city of Jerico with trumpets and carrying the ark for seven days of praising God. Then they saw the city just tumbled.

 God sent water from Kishon River and thunder to disable Sisera’s mighty iron chariots and the Canaanite army for Barak with smaller army to take victory

 Jael, a lowly tent woman, killed the mighty Canaanite general, Sisera, with a tent peg in the battle led by Deborah and Barak

These bible passages encouraged me to do the best I can with the current assignment and be rest assured that God has gone ahead to pave the way to deliver what seems to be very challenging, if not impossible … redevelop WECC at a cost of over £2M, sustaining the resourcing hub ministries when the extra funding ends in 2027.

The doing and walking with God is becoming who I am in this season.
