A flower garden made of pipe cleaners in a bed of styrofoam

Flower garden made by our children and young people. A sermon illustration.

In preparing my talk this past Sunday, I had a conversation with Claire and Fran as they got ready to lead the activity session for our children and young people (CYP).

It is often late in the week when I am at that point that I have the ‘knob’ of my talk. And I mean late. So I was relieved when on Friday morning - after some heated discussions during our small group, late on Thursday night, I was able to email round that …

‘…in my talk , I will be exploring what might happen to us if we open up ourselves up to wonder’.

As such I suggested ‘...an activity that allows space to be imaginative or one that creates space for the CYP to explore what might emerge as we participate together or co-create with God. And concluded that ‘ …it’s really about what happens when we come to believe that we have license to ‘get involved’...

Come Sunday morning as my talk got underway, the CYP got busy. And above is the outcome. A garden made entirely of multi-coloured pipecleaners in a bed of styrofoam.

A powerful reminder if we needed it that God takes all we bring to the table. All are welcome. All are included. And that God delights in the multiplicity and diversity of God’s creation.

But most importantly - God wants to play. And God calls out for you and I to come and play. At the knob of the good news of Jesus is an invitation to participate in God’s divine nature. 2 Peter 1:4
