Reflections of a Young Confirmation Candidate

Today I went to a confirmation class. I don’t really know why I want to be confirmed. After talking with my mum, I think it’s because I love this church so much that I want to officially become a member. Hopefully the actual confirmation will go well (I’m not saying it won’t!!!). I’m quite excited for the confirmation. The new bishop is doing the confirmation/baptism service. It‘s going to be cafe style! Although I feel a bit nervous, I also feel good since there will be food!

At confirmation class, I met new people and got to learn a bit about them. Surprisingly, I was the only child there! I was kind of expecting to be the only person under 16 there since in the baptism classes in May 2024, I was the only child there. The age range was quite big; I was the youngest since I am 11 and someone is over 80. Some people are getting baptised, others will be getting confirmed. I’m one of the people getting confirmed. We were told how it would work and we were given a tiny bit of homework the first week. There were 2 classes in total. Some of the people there I already knew and some people I didn’t know that well or I didn’t know them at all. Overall, these 2 classes were great chances to get to know one another. There were quite a lot of people at these classes. I think there were 8 or 9 people but that’s still a lot of people!

On the first week, it was more about getting to know one another than figuring out what was going to happen on the day that the bishop came. The first activity was an activity that we’ve done before at Tea and Toast: Fast Friends! Fast friends is a game where 2 people have a 1 to 1 with each other about the question that they were given. After 2 or 3 minutes, the person on the front row or back row will either move one seat to the left or right. The game of Fast Friends was quite fun. It was a nice way to get to know someone better. Another thing we did at the confirmation/baptism class was a game with cards - not playing cards! These cards had pictures such as a sign with the word ‘go!’ on it or a stethoscope card or a card with a cutting board on it. Oh how much I loved that cutting board card (I used it to show I was hungry!). The first week I chose the cutting board card since I had food and this food was a new food for me: mac ‘n cheese croquettes! On the second week, I picked a card with a question mark on it since I had a few questions about the confirmation service. Luckily, those questions got answered. Well, all that’s left is to wait for the bishop to come and do the baptisms and confirmations!
